About

HOW SCIENCE PERPETUATES RACISM

In the last several years, it's been imperative to get behind science whether for a better understanding of climate change or how to address infectious diseases. Scientists are bound by professional, legal, and ethical standards in how they conduct research and inform human subjects about any associated risks. These standards didn't exist before the 1970s, causing disproportionate harm to minoritized communities. The belief that race was a biological construct, as opposed to a social construct, continues to complicate the theories and practice of science. One way to address this is to work for better racial representation in the sciences.

2. Are there any local organizations or nearby universities working to address the underrepresentation of minoritized communities in the physical or social sciences, medicine, technology, or medicine? How might you support those or get involved?
